Harbor Beach Lions Club

Seventy-two years of service to Our Community

Harbor Beach Lions Club in Huron County, Michigan -- About the Lions

About the Harbor Beach Lions Club

The Harbor Beach Lions are comprised of individuals from many walks of life who have the common goal of service to the blind, the needy, and to the community in general.

Known for working to end preventable blindness, Lions participate in a vast variety of projects important to their communities.

Lions are men.  Lions are women.  Lions are young.  Lions are old. Lions are of all religious faiths.  Lions are of all nationalities.  About the only qualification you must have is that you must be willing to help your community.  Some members are factory workers while other are doctors. Many are retired and don't work at all, and still others are dedicated housewife’s, or househusbands.  So whatever your age, sex, or occupation may be you will fit right in.

The Harbor Beach Lions Club belongs to Lions Clubs International, the world's largest service club organization, with a network of 1.3 million men and women in more than 200 countries and geographical locations. We serve where we live, as well as globally, and we have fun doing it.

Lions give 100 percent of donations to our causes. We cover all our costs through our dues.

The Harbor Beach Lions Club was chartered November 22, 1938.

Serving the Harbor Beach and Huron County Community:

Serving Michigan and the World:

How we raise money to help us serve

Old Glasses Give New Life

Lions help to conserve sight by providing usable eyeglasses to children and adults throughout the world.  Donated eyeglasses can help millions to experience corrected vision for the first time, enabling them to read, attend school, gain employment, and take care of their families.  Eyeglass recycling is one of the Lions' most popular activities.  Although the program was officially adopted by the association in 1994, Lions have been collecting glasses for more than 80 years.

Also, used and depleted cell phones are requested.  Donated cell phones are sold to a company that recycles them.  The money we receive from recycling cell phones is used to purchase calling cards that we send to troops in need.

Drop off your used eye glasses or used cell phones at Al's Restaurant, Harbor Light Lounge or give them to a member of the club.

Members of the Harbor Beach Lions Club took  to the streets and store fronts of Harbor Beach May 1 and May 2, 2009 (Friday and Saturday) to raise funds as part of the annual White Cane Week.  Funds donated by community members will be used to support many sight and hearing projects, including Leader Dogs for the Blind in Rochester, Michigan, Eye Bank, and Transplant Center in Ann Arbor, Lions Bear Lake Camp for Physically Challenged Youth in Lapeer, Penrickton Center for Blind Children in Taylor, Beaumont Silent Children Fund, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, and the Lions Hearing Center of Michigan, just to mention a few.

Money raised during White Cane Week will also allow Lions to meet pressing needs in our community, including such items and eyeglass and hearing aid support for those in need and KidSight vision screening for pre-school children.

Lions Clubs International is the world’s largest service club organization with over 1.3 million members in 202 countries and geographical areas around the world.

Since 1917, Lions clubs have aided the blind and visually impaired and made a strong commitment to community service and serving youth throughout the world.  For more information about Lions Clubs International, visit the website at www.lionsclubs.org.   See  Lions White Cane Fact Sheet for more information about White Cane Week.
